Obituary for Herman Lee Sims

Herman Lee  Sims
Herman Lee Sims, age 89, of 142 Fernwood Circle Rutherfordton, NC passed away peacefully Saturday at Hospice House in Forest City. Herman was a native of Rutherford County, the son of the late Jesse Lee and Iola Spurlin Sims. He was educated in Rutherford County Schools and had a special place in his heart for Ruth Elementary and RS Central High School where he served on numerous boards. He furthered his education at Wofford College after returning from serving his country in WW II. An entrepreneur at heart Herman had various jobs, including radio announcer at WAGY; managing, owning or clerking in various department stores throughout the county including; Belks, Moore’s, Dalton’s and Town and Country.
World War II saw Herman serving his country as a Marine on the beaches of Iwo Jima and with the occupation forces in Japan after the war. He was later recalled to duty serving with the US Army during the Korean War.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Hazel Bridges Sims of the home; son Andy (June) Sims of Spindale; daughters Donna (Keith) Baynard of Greenville, SC; Amy (Craig) Jenkins of Rutherfordton; sister Margie Sims Frady of Rutherfordton; grandchildren Andrew and Jacob Jenkins of Spindale, Sarah Bryant of Atlanta; Kevin Baynard of Roswell, Ga., and great Grandchild Elias Jenkins of Spindale.
A service to celebrate the life of Herman Lee Sims will be held 11 AM Wednesday February 24, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Rutherfordton with Rev. Tim Marsh officiating. Burial will follow in the Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday February 23, 2016 at Crowe’s Funeral Home..
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church Rutherfordton (Open Table) 246 North Main St Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
