A lover of the ocean liners: Jordan stumbled (via providence) into our lives from one of the Titanic Facebook groups in mid-2013 and we have not been the same since. I knew immediately that this was someone I wanted to help run our group so I made the effort to go visit him and check him out a little bit at one of his monthly Titanic club meetings in Rutherfordton, NC. I was surprised to find 20-something people at that meeting lead by a young guy with a tattoo of the ship on his arm who was completely excited by it, her history, and everything to do with it right down to the different types of forks and china that were used and the sometimes odd types of food that were served onboard. He used to even organize dinners for this club at which they sampled some of the items recreated from Titanic's own actual menus... He was devoted to his interest! Not long after joining us he discovered through the group and his new friend, Kipfer Fox, the existence of another great passenger liner from our past, the SS United States, and life took a turn for Jordan. He realized that his efforts at memorializing Titanic could be put to better use if concentrated on the salvation of one of the world's only remaining liners and fastest of them all, SS United States. He became aware, of course, of the other great liners in existence, but the Big U seemed to him to have the most pressing need so she became his passion. In the past couple of years, Jordan dived headlong into working to save the ship and as a result became involved with the SS United States Conservancy and eventually became the Conservancy's Southeast Chapter chairman. Many, many people are involved with the effort to rescue the Big U from scrapping and secure a future for her as an RMS Queen Mary-type hotel and attraction but there are few who could be said are more excited and passionate about seeing the SS United States return to her former glory as one of the most beautiful ships to ever sail under an American flag. During the past two years Jordan became immersed into the broader ocean liner community and its interest groups on Facebook, trying at every opportunity to find ways to raise interest in the subject and, of course, awareness in the plight of the SS United States and the Conservancy's efforts to save her. In that time he became close friends with all of we, the other administrators, and very many of the 2,800 members of our group. We benefitted more than I can say as a group and in our personal relationships from both his unfailing skills as an administrator and his ever-present Jordan-esque manner which one would have to experience to understand because I'm having difficulty finding the words necessary in which to describe it except to add that he was perhaps always as interested in others and what was going on in their lives as he was his own. Jordan's passing has both broken us and strangely made us stronger. It is unnecessary to say that we have lost our steam and that we're having trouble building it back but we eventually will return to a normal and purposeful state with the help of all the friends we still have whom we love and that we will plow forward through the knowledge that we still have those, like the one we lost, who are willing to work to help maintain and increase this special and blessed group of ocean liner enthusiasts.
