Obituary for Yvonna Mayse (Chapman)
Yvonna Chapman Mayse, age 97, devoted and beloved mother of Freda Ann Mayse and Cindy Mayse Chapman, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at her home in Flat Rock, NC. Born in Rutherford County, NC on January 7, 1926, she was the only child of William Elliott Chapman and Anna Bland Snowden and adored wife of the late Fred Lee Mayse, Jr.
Yvonna is survived by Freda of Shelby, NC; Cindy and her cherished son in law, G. Harold Chapman of Greenville, SC; grandchildren Kim Ledet(Judd) of Atlanta, GA, Clay Chapman(Laura) of Knoxville, TN and great grandchildren, Greyson, Emma, Chase and Austin; Chosen Daughters, Leigh Callahan of Chapel Hill, NC, Martine “Beth” Kommer of Luxembourg and Pia Wilberg Koistinen of Finland; beloved sister in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friend and caregiving Angel, Ernestine Sherman.
Yvonna graduated from R-S Central High School and Mars Hill College and completed professional study through the Bank Administration Institute. She was assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at First Union National Bank at Rutherfordton’s main office before retiring from a 45 year banking career which began at Security Bank and Trust Company in Rutherfordton which merged with The Northwestern Bank and First Union.
She is a former member of North Carolina’s Rutherfordton/Spindale First Union Advisory Board, Mars Hill College Board of Advisors, the Town of Rutherfordton Revitalization Committee and a volunteer for many community service groups, including the March of Dimes, Heart Fund, Spindale Woman’s Club and a Girl Scout Leader.
Yvonna and husband, Fred, were active and devoted members of First Baptist Church of Spindale where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Training Union Leader and President of the Women’s Missionary Society.
Upon retirement, Yvonna and Fred retired to Flat Rock, NC where they continued to thrive, nurture and devote precious time to family, friends and community.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 11:00 AM at The Spindale House, 119 Tanner St. Spindale NC. Interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1565 Oakland Road, Forest City, NC will take place prior to the service at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
