William Rufus McGowan “Billy” passed away on June 26, 2022 at the age of 70, in his hometown of Rutherfordton NC. If you knew Billy, you loved Billy. Billy was an artistic soul, from his stain-glass to his woodworking. Sundays consisted of enjoying family, Nascar, and relaxing by the pool. But his greatest pastime was spending time with his family.
Billy married his best friend, Susan Callahan McGowan. They have been together for 52 years. They have three children: William Rufus McGowan ll “Mac” of Holden Beach NC, with his wife Monique McGowan and their children, Will and Emma McGowan. His eldest Daughter Katharine Gray McGowan “Katie “of Atlanta GA. And his youngest daughter Harriet Elizabeth McGowan, of Banner Elk NC, with her husband Garrett Merck and daughter Mackenzie Merck. All survived by.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents William Estes McGowan and Alta Wilson McGowan, his younger sister Sara Julie McGowan. He is Survived by his eldest sibling Vivian McGowan Johnson, of Raleigh NC, her husband, Bud Johnson and nephew David Johnson.

There will be a celebration of Billy's life at The First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton NC Friday July 1, 2022 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Following the ceremony there will be gathering in the memorial garden to spread his ashes.
