Obituary for Vivian Netha McKinney (Young)

RUTHERFORDTON, NC- Vivian Netha Young McKinney, age 77, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was born on March 29, 1943 in Apex, North Carolina to William Walder and Netha Smith Young. She graduated from Apex High School in 1962 and attended the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1962, she won Miss Congeniality in the Apex Beauty Pageant.
On November 14, 2020, she would have made 56 years in marriage to the love of her life, James McKinney. They met in Apex while Jim was working on US #1. Because of his job they moved to several different states, Florida, Kentucky to Greenville, South Carolina before settling in Jim’s hometown of Rutherfordton. Netha had to adjust to the remote, small town living in Rutherfordton but soon grew to love the people and the community.
She was active in the community, as a grade mother, former PTA President for Ruth Elementary School, Girl Scout Leader for 20 years, enjoyed participation with Isothermal Singers, traveling with the Senior Citizen Center and the Foothills Corvair Club. She also severed as a member and formal secretary for the Foothills Chapter of (OVTA) Over Mountain Victory Trail Association. Her passion lied in the arts, she enjoyed her painting with acrylic, oils and watercolors. Her true talents lie in her pencil sketches of which she won several awards in the Senior Olympics.
Netha was faithfully dedicated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served the congregation as a Primary Teacher, Relief Society Homemaker, Ward Activity Director, and a Visiting Teacher.
Netha was devoted to her family, as a homemaker, caretaker, and an advisor. She worked tireless outside the home as a secretary for Home Security Insurance Company, and a cosmetician for Eckerd Drug Company until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother William (Bill) Young, Jr. Netha is survived by her husband, (Jim) James C. McKinney; her daughters Taran McKinney Long (Yates), Tina McKinney Porter (Tim), and son of her heart, Timmy Tessaneer (Shelly), and three grandchildren, Lisa Long, Lynn Long Alen (Stephen), and Zackery McKinney Porter and one great-grandchild Connor Alen. A brother Alvin Young, and a sister-in-laws Claudia Young, Edith Jones, Helen Long, Shirley Glover, and Barbara Epley (Don). And, many nieces and nephews.
Netha was loved and admired by many in the community that considered her as an adopted mother, and grandmother.
A private family service is planned on Saturday, September 19, 2020 and dedication of the grave will be held at Southern Baptist Church Cemetery for the public at 3:30 p.m.
