Obituary for Ralph Douglas Tucker Jr.

CDR Ralph Douglas Tucker, USN (Retired) passed away on September 6th, 2022 at the age of 88.

Born in Atlanta, GA to Ralph and Edna Warren Tucker; Doug moved to Mamaroneck, NY as a youngster and upon graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. After several years of service on surface ships and in shipyards, Doug volunteered for submarine duty and found his calling in sonar. He was accepted into the Limited Duty Officer Program, earning the rank of Commander, the highest grade legally possible for an enlisted man. He went on to Sublant Staff in Washington, DC and Norfolk, VA, serving under several Admirals as a troubleshooter in sonar technology and testing. After retirement, he was a consultant to the Navy on diesel submarine systems. Doug’s career spanned some thirty years and he was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War.

Doug is survived by his wife, Nancy “Tika” Tucker; sons, Randy Tucker and Bud Quinley; daughters, Mary Jo Goldsmith and Sherry Werner; his second family, Jeff Gragg and Tina Gragg. Doug is also survived by twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of twenty-five years, Faye and two sons, Gene Tucker and Bob Quinley.

Doug loved the Navy, big dogs, baseball, guitars, diesel engines and country music. It is with this in mind that the family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Paws for Purple Hearts https:pawsforpurplehearts.org.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held from 2 – 4 P.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Crowe’s Mortuary, 118 College Ave., Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
