Rachel Jane Metcalfe Summey, age 94, died Monday, June 27, 2022, in Rutherfordton, NC. She was born on February 16, 1928, to Charles Harold Metcalfe, Sr., and Jennie Louise Hawkins in Cliffside, NC. Rachel graduated from Cool Springs High School in Forest City, NC, attended Mary Washington College, and graduated from Florida Southern University, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She pursued post-graduate studies in Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. Rachel married Mark Lee Summey in March, 1957. They devoted themselves to raising their three daughters in Spindale, NC. Rachel was very active in her community and church. She served as Girl Scout leader, President of PTA, and on the Oversight Board of Foster Homes of NC. She was active in Spindale United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and she enjoyed visiting residents at senior living facilities. Rachel's career was in social work with the Department of Social Services of Rutherford County. With a heart for children, she realized her life’s calling by specializing in Foster Care and Adoption. Her work with families and children touched many lives in Rutherford and surrounding counties. Rachel was a compassionate seeker of justice. In retirement, she was especially active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. She mentored several young women and treated them like family, having a profound and lasting impact on their lives. Rachel was a huge sports fan. Dean Smith and her beloved Tar Heels were near and dear to her heart. She also loved attending her grandchildren’s games as they played sports through high school and college. She proudly supported them, rain or shine, nearby or hours away. Her special cheering section was affectionately known as the “Granny Brigade.” Rachel also loved playing bridge with “the girls.” This special club became a decades long monthly tradition. As a loyal and devoted friend, for Rachel, this was not just a time to play cards, but a cherished way of remaining close and connected with her high school buddies. Rachel was predeceased by her parents, her brother Harold Metcalfe, and her husband Mark. She is survived by her daughters, Jane Anthony Summey (Dale Mullennix) of Charlotte, NC, Sallie Summey Smith of Rutherfordton, NC, and Susan Summey Wilkening (Leif) of Locust Grove, VA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Sarah Morse (Milton Marquez Flores), Laura Morse Koepke (Mack), Anna Wilkening Blake (Andy), Eric Wilkening (Danielle), Luke Wilkening (Leanna), Isaac Wilkening, Timothy Wilkening, Aaron Mullennix, Amanda Mullennix, and three great-grandchildren, Whitman Koepke, Maya Marquez, and Liam Marquez. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. at Spindale United Methodist Church.
