Obituary for Michael Austin "Mike" Long

Michael Austin Long, “Mike”, age 77 of Old Gilberttown Road went home to be with The Lord on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 while being cared for by Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.
A native of Rutherford County, Mike was a graduate of R.S. Central High School Class of 1962 and attended Appalachian State University and Gardner-Webb University. He served our country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a faithful member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, a former member of the Lion’s Club, retired from Lowe’s and was a loyal Duke fan.
Mike is survived by his wife, Judy Revis Long, one brother, Bart Long, one nephew, Al Ledford, one niece, Michelle Padgett, his beloved dog, Cooper and a number of other family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Horace Long, his mother, Doris Edwards Long, and two sisters, Ellen Petty and Pat Ledford.
A funeral service will be held 3 P.M. Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Tomlinson, Rev. Karl Kelly and Rev. John Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 2:45 P.M. Saturday, May 22, 2021 in the church fellowship hall.
The family wishes to extend a special “thank you” to the staff of Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, the staff of Carolina Home Care, and to Dr. Benjamin Lyles and staff for the exceptional care given to Mike during the course of his illness.
It is recommended that memorials in Mike’s honor be made to Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, 2869 Hudlow Road, Forest City, NC 28043 or to your local animal rescue organizations.
