Obituary for Michael Laurence Huntley

The world is a little less bright after the passing of Michael Laurence Huntley, 71, of Cliffside NC, following a brief illness.

He loved the life he lived centered on faith, family, and a fulfilling career. He departed it surrounded by his favorite people:

His wife, best friend, and frequent traveling companion, Becky, who filled his heart and days with more joy than he could manage; and in 18 years together, he never got over the schoolboy-like crush he had on her.

His adult children and their spouses: Brannon & Carmen, Christopher, Michelle & Jimmy, Peter & AmyLynnne. He delighted in the energy and laughter they brought into his life and home, and he loved them extravagantly for it.

His grandchildren: Alton, Aubrie, Benjamin, Brandon, Caedym, Cally, Duncan, Elizabeth, Hadley, Isabella, Isaiah, Marilla, Powell, and Whit. He adored them most of all, and they called him Groggy. Never once did any of them hear him say the word “no”. (They also never heard him tell a story that wasn’t at least a little bit stretched.)

His oldest and dearest friend, his brother Johnny, who was often his co-conspirator in sweet displays of affection (and the occasional practical joke) usually directed at his beloved sister-in-law Cammie, his nieces and nephews, and their spouses and children.

For his friends -- and he considered everyone he met a friend -- he was generous of time and spirit. Their requests for help and offers of companionship always immediately became the most important thing he was doing, regardless of the time or circumstance.

He entered the presence of his Heavenly Father greeted-in-celebration by his mother, Rebecca; father, Manson; brother, Mark; grandson, Roland; and grandparents, uncles, and aunts whose beloved memories he spent his life celebrating and keeping alive.

A funeral service is planned for Thursday, January 19th, 2pm at First United Methodist Church of Forest City with the Rev. Curtis Goforth officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.. It will start as a lovely service of Thanksgiving for this life well-lived, but will likely end with us finding comfort laughing at each other’s stories which all begin “One time Mike…”

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society PO Box 42040, Oklahoma City OK 73123 or Hospice of the Carolinas Foothills, PO box 336 Forest City NC 28043.
