Obituary for Ethel Metcalf

Ethel Edgerton Metcalf, wife of John Samuel Metcalf, passed away Tuesday November 29, 2022 at Willow Ridge. A native of Rutherford County, Ethel was the youngest child of John Harris and Estelle Caroline Edgerton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings; Memory, Wayne, Dob, Alton, Hoyle, Lillian, Mildred, Lois and Theo. Education was always a part of Ethel’s life. Graduating from Gardner Webb and Limestone Colleges she went on to teach in Rutherford County Schools for 34 years; primarily at Ruth Elementary where she received teacher of the year on 2 occasions. Ethel was also a proud graduate of Mt. Vernon High where she still holds the basketball scoring record of 54 points. A lifelong member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Ethel continued influencing the youth of the community through Sunday school, GA’s and numerous other church offices.
In addition to the love of her life, Sam, who she was married to for 68 years and met in 1st grade, she leaves cherished memories with her daughters Anne Parton (Warren), Caroline Wellmon ( Larry); two grandchildren Savannah Parton and Christopher Wellmon along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
A service to celebrate the life of Ethel Metcalf will be held at 11:30 AM Thursday December 1, 2022 at Mt Vernon Baptist Church with Dr. Scott Courtney and Rev. Richard Bass officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM prior to the service.
