Obituary for Elvira Elaine Wohlford (Rosenkranz)

Elvira Elaine Wohlford, age 94, went to be with her Heavenly Father on March 17, 2021 at Elmcroft of Hendersonville, NC. Elaine was born in Hoboken, NJ on November 27, 1926, the daughter of Romaine Schmidt and Carl Rosenkranz. She was predeceased by her parents, husband and by her sister, Anita Tarrant. She graduated from Edgewood Park College in Briarcliff Manor, NY with an art degree. In 1945, upon his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, she married Harold Ballard Wohlford. Air Force life moved them first to Germany and then several locations across the country. Upon her husband’s passing in 1976, she moved to Hendersonville, NC and later to Lake Lure, NC. She was a member of Fairfield Mountains Chapel and warmed her way into the hearts of our chapel family and community with her smile, friendly nature and sense of humor.
During her long life, Elaine enjoyed many activities – acting, singing, painting, riding horses, ice skating and playing golf. She loved chocolate pudding piled high with whipped cream! She volunteered for years with Hendersonville Humane Society (now Blue Ridge H.S.) and Hendersonville Travel & Tourism. She enjoyed the out-of-doors, all animals and loved life. She had a long working career doing a variety of jobs. One in particular that she enjoyed very much was selling advertising to support the horse shows at Western Carolina Agricultural Center, Fletcher, NC. She even designed a t-shirt for the annual show with a silhouette of a horse’s head that she had drawn. She was extremely talented, good-natured, a true friend, a wonderful mother and wife.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Sandra Rockman and husband, Roy and Pamela Keith and husband, Robert, seven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren and her special little dog, Zorro.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Fairfield Mountains Chapel, Lake Lure, NC at 2 PM, Saturday, April 24, 2021. Elaine will be buried at West Point Cemetery with her late husband, Lt. Col. Harold Wohlford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043 or any animal rescue group of your choice.
