Obituary for Edward Emanuel McDuffie

Edward Emanuel McDuffie (aka, Eddie, Mac, Tuff McDuff) age 92 of Bostic, NC passed away on August 11, 2022. He was husband to Gudrun for 57 years and the son of the late Harry McDuffie and Ethel Dykes McDuffie. He was born in Lucedale, Mississippi January 29, 1930. Edward joined the U.S. Army in 1946 serving one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He retired after 22 years and made his home in Fayetteville, NC. After serving in the Army, Edward finished his education and began his second career instructing students in Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning at Fayetteville Technical Institute (Fayetteville Technical College) and owned and operated Trouble Shooter and Repair until his retirement. During his retirement years Edward was an avid reader, loved gardening, and sharing the bounty of his garden with family and friends. Upon Gudrun’s retirement, she and Edward moved to Rutherford County, North Carolina. Dad loved to tell stories about his youth and his time in the Army. If you asked him to tell you a story about a particular event he’d say, “Which version? The truth or what I told my sergeant?” He often had a corny joke to share of which he’d get the best laugh out of it regardless of how many times he told the same joke. We will miss his jokes and elaborate and sometimes embellished stories. In addition to his parents Edward is preceded in death by his siblings Herbert McDuffie, Marion Carlton McDuffie, Nina Hobby, Helen Marie Cluff, Merle McDuffie, Christine Bedwell, Frances Crosby and Gloria Wallace. He leaves to cherish his memory his sweet wife Gudrun, children, Karen McDuffie of Angier, NC, Franziska Hawkins, (Mark) of Bostic, NC and Herbert Ray McDuffie of Debary, FL. Grandchildren Ashley Maidon, Sarah Fisher (Jared), Mary Hawkins, Christian McDuffie, and Delaney McDuffie in addition to three great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Aaron McDuffie, David McDuffie (Anita), Linda Diane McAlister (Bruce), Joyce Mitchell, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff at Hospice of Rutherford County. Edward’s urn will be interred at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, NC. At Edward’s request, no formal service or visitation will be held.
