Asheville, NC
Doris Nix Smith went to be with her Lord Friday, June 12, 2020. She will be missed by many including her loving husband of 64 years, James Smith, her daughter, Cynthia Smith Watson, her son in law, Steve Watson, and her three grandsons, James, William and Grant Watson of Asheville. She is survived by one dear brother, Marshall Nix of Rutherfordton.
Doris worked in banking for more than 40 years and was well-known and loved by co-workers as well as customers. She was a collector of many beautiful figurines and antiques and dragged her loving husband all over the South collecting them. She was a master biscuit-maker and loved nothing more than making country ham biscuits for her grandsons. She dearly loved and kept up with her extended family of nieces and nephews. She was kind, she was patient, she was her daughter’s best friend, and the love of her husband’s life. Our only peace is in knowing that she is enjoying the family reunion of a lifetime in Heaven!
In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations in her honor to be made to Spencer Baptist Church, 187 N. Oak Street, Spindale, NC or the John Keever Solace Center, PO Box 5779, Asheville, NC.
A Celebration of her life will be held at Spencer Baptist Church in Spindale, NC on Sunday, June 14 at 2 pm. Spencer Church has a large sanctuary as well as a balcony, and anyone who feels the need to “social distance” will have plenty of room to do so. Doris will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. The service may be viewed on the church's Facebook page.

Jimmy and Cynthia, our deepest condolences to you, Steve, and the boys in the loss of your wife and mom. I have so many good memories of either listening to your mom, my mom, and Kathryn talk on the phone, or hanging out at each other's houses on Sunday nights. There was always good fellowship, lots of laughs, and good food. We rejoice in knowing she is with the Lord and we will see her again in eternity. May God's peace give you comfort during this time.

I first met Doris when James was doing bookkeeping for my boss, John N. Greene, at Crossroads Remnant Barn & Rug Shop. Then I came back from Vietnam and had the privilege of working with her at Northwestern Bank in Forest City for 3 years before being transferred to Franklin. I don't think I ever heard anyone say anything against Doris. She was a sweet and pleasant person and I am honored to have known her. My deepest sympathy is extended to James and all her family and friends.

I worked at Bostic Northwestern Bank and our paths would cross many times. She was a special lady and always willing to help when we needed to figure out something that we did not know. She was special to the bank and her customers. God bless her friends and family as they travel this journey. Special memories will be their comfort.
