Obituary for Craig Robert Bailey

Captain Craig Robert Bailey, age 81, passed away in his sleep on November 20, 2021. Craig served in the U.S. Navy from ’58 until his honorable discharge in 1964, as a missile man on some of the last diesel-powered submarines ever commissioned. This included his last stint on the USS Corporal a “spook boat” operating above the Arctic Circle. In 1965 he briefly attended the University of Iowa. He moved to Boston in 1966 and started his maritime career and family. Relocating to Miami, Florida in 1970, he began a series of stints on fishing vessels, yachts and merchant ships in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. By the early eighties he had turned his focus to commercial towing. His proudest achievement was his time as an Owner/Operator of a 150 ft, ex-Smit Ocean Tug, renamed The Dr. Daniels, which he captained to nearly every corner of the globe except the Far East. He kept working at sea into his 70’s, as he moved to Western North Carolina to promote a peaceful retirement in a beautiful place. He spent his last decade in his house in the woods near Rutherfordton, NC, making new friends, and contemplating, and sharing a life of adventure few people experience.

He is survived by his brother; Jay Bailey, son; Frederick Bailey, daughter; Carina Bailey, granddaughter; Tabitha Vogel and ex-wife Blanca Lippisch.
