Obituary for Bobby Eugene Jones

Bobby Eugene Jones was born in Forest City, North Carolina on June 6, 1934 to Ransom and Edith Burleson Jones.
Bobby graduated from R.S. Central High School in 1952, where he was proud to have served as Student Body President during his senior year. He continued his education at North Carolina State University, graduating in 1956 with a B.S. degree in textile management. On the same day, he married his soulmate, Patricia Owens, and was soon commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. He was on active duty for six months and served his country for another eight years, attaining the rank of Captain.

For the next thirty-five years, Bobby worked in various supervisory and management positions in the textile industry, but he often said that his best years were at Spartanburg Community College, where he held the position of Head of the Textiles Management Associate Degree program.
A lifelong devout and dedicated Christian, Bobby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton and served on various committees. He taught Sunday school for over forty years and at one time, was chairman of the deacon council.

Throughout his life, Bobby was very involved in the community which he loved and served on the Rutherfordton Town Council for ten years, being Mayor Pro Tem for eight.

Bobby loved life, and when asked how his day was going, he would say, "Every day is a good day." He enjoyed auto shows and cars, especially from the late 1950’s and 1960’s. Music was a great passion, and his favorites included songs by Chuck Berry, Jerry Rafferty, the Bee Gees, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King. He also loved westerns, crime shows, basketball, and action adventure movies. For many years, he enjoyed walking and playing tennis with friends, but nothing was more important to him than his family. After their retirement, Bobby and Patricia spent several years traveling across the country and to Canada, and they loved going to concerts at the Foundation with good friends.

Bobby lived a life full of compassion towards others and animals, integrity, honesty, and courage. His optimism and positive outlook, sense of humor, and great love and support for family and friends inspired those who knew him.
Bobby was preceded in death by his son, Alan E. Jones, and an older brother, Paul Jones.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Patricia Owens Jones, their daughter, Alana Jones, and a brother, Garland Jones, and his wife, Creola.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, North Carolina, 28043.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 28th at 2:00 at Brittain Presbyterian Church in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.
