Obituary for Barbro Helen Ask-Upmark

Barbro Helen Ask-Upmark lived a remarkable life. Her journey started in Sweden where she was born to the parents Maria and Erik Ask-Upmark. In her youth she enjoyed writing, and was especially fond of poetry. By the age of 12 she had published her first book, Man on Earth, which would later become one of Sweden’s bestselling poetry books of all time. Barbro would experience many other accomplishments throughout her lifetime. In her early career she became one of Sweden’s first female Mounted Police Officers. In this capacity she served 18 years training both horses as well as follow officers in the art of horsemanship. As her career transformed she began to concentrate more on her skills as an instructor. Focus soon began on dressage and she regularly contributed to the Swedish Equestrian magazine, “The Horse Journal” this work allowed her to travel throughout both Germany and Great Britain. After winning Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in several international competitions, Barbro’s reputation continued to grow as an exceptional trainer. Soon other opportunities presented themselves and in 1999, Barbro made the move to California, USA. Here she continued to train in dressage, but became more focused on equine simulator training. Towards the end of her career she relocated to the Tryon International Equestrian Center where she became the education manager and onsite instructor for “Tryon Maximus.” Barbro lived a full life; the equestrian community had become both her friends and family, she will surely be missed. Survivors include her husband Aramis Fontenol, children Erik Ask-Upmark and wife Anna, grandchildren Sam, Love, and Saga.
